The KFA

The KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg was set up in 1992 by the organisers of NoBudget Short Film Festival (since 1994 Hamburg Int. Short Film Festival). One of the Agency's main functions is to promote of the short film as a multi-faceted art form. Our work is motivated by enthusiasm and passion for a media format which as a result of its highly diverse nature refuses categorization.

The KurzFilmAgentur is continually working to promote and improve the way short films are presented and increase their possible uses. The Agency acts both as an interface between the filmmaker and the end-user and also an influencer of the political environment in which the short film finds itself. The latter role is best exemplified by our work as a founder- and board member of German Short Film Association (AG Kurzfilm – Bundesverband deutscher Kurzfilm) and the steady and constructive dialogue we maintain with.

Since its foundation the KFA brought numerous and diverse film-related projects to completion. The main focus of the KFA's work lies in the distribution of short film and the running of the International Short Film Festival Hamburg.

However our curatorial work for other film festivals, institutions and private companies on a national and international basis occupies an important position in the KurzFilmAgentur's objectives. In this role the Agency undertakes film research, procures prints and offers its services as a cooperation partner for cultural events and projects involving short film. To achieve these goals the Agency uses the long-standing experience of the KFA's personnel, our excellent contacts within the short-film branch and the facilities of our extensive archive and database. Numerous national and international film festivals as well as private companies and the Goethe-Institute have already worked closely with the KFA and made use of these resources.

The ContactPoint for short film (Verbindungsstelle) acts to improve the public perception of German short film productions on a national level, advises young filmmakers on marketing and distribution possibilities for their work as well as developing new marketing strategies for the short film format.

As a member of numerous national and international film-related institutions the KurzFilmAgentur maintains close ties with the film institutes of other countries.

The work of the Agency is supported financially and non-materially by various film-political and cultural bodies, in particular the Kulturbehörde Hamburg, the Federal Commission of Culture and Media (BKM) and Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein. Cooperation with national film-funding institutions is an important part of our work. In this respect we are currently working with the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), representatives of cinema and other short film distributors on a project to have more short films screened in German cinemas before the main feature.
